A Hume caters to men and women with distinguished taste and style, and stocks clothing that nods to British tradition while still retaining the country’s penchant for quirk. The retailer specializes in the highest quality cashmere and tweeds, and stocks menswear, womenswear and a full range of shoes and accessories.

We sat down with Archie Hume, the owner of A Hume, and talked about everything from the retailer’s beginnings in the family to what this summer wouldn’t be complete without. Read below for more!

STEPHANIE: Please tell us about your brand.
ARCHIE HUME: A Hume was founded and opened by my grandfather in 1929 and has housed the business operation from its location corner of Kelso Square for the last 86 years.

We are a niche independent retailer focusing on providing premium lifestyle country clothing for ladies and gentleman of a discerning and stylish nature. Through the provision of niche and artisan brands not found on the high street, with a focus on sourcing the very best of both local and global products that include; locally sourced premium lambswool and cashmere knitwear, locally produced exclusive tweed cloths designed by us for Tweed Sports Jackets, Yorkshire handmade Tweed caps, Australian sourced RM Williams footwear and clothing and premium country brands including Dubarry of Ireland and Schoffel. No matter what the product, from caps and hats to socks and shoes and everything in between, we aim to provide our customers with the very best products the country clothing market has to offer.

What are some of this season's biggest trends?
This season we have seen a move to slimmer fitting trousers and shirts. Jackets are also more tailored with a fitted waist.

Which summer trends are you most excited about.
In summer it has to be bold colours. Eden Park has a great range of brightly coloured shirts this season. You know it is summer when pink shirts are in!

What is one must have item from your collection?
For gentleman it has to be either a pair of RM Williams boots or a Tweed Jacket and for the ladies a pair of Dubarry Galway Boots worn with an Anna Lascata jacket. These items of clothing will always look good in the town or country.

Who is an A Hume customer?
A Hume is a country brand and our customers tend to have some link to the countryside. We are seeing a lot of stylish urbanites picking up parts of the collection and putting their own style twist to it. I love it!

What sets British style apart from the rest?
We are a quirky nation so we get quirky looks. I love walking down the street and seeing 57 varieties of fashion, some work and some don’t work as well but that’s life. If you think you look the bee’s knees - good on you.

What are some details to watch out for this season?
Quality is never out of season. A well made Tweed Jacket will see you from season to season.

Fill in the blank: Summer wouldn't be complete without...
A day at Lord’s watching the cricket! Lots of runs, lots of wickets, lots of laughs, perfect.

What is the inspiration behind the clothes of A Hume?
We live in the Scottish Borders, an area of the countryside where some of the best tweeds and cashmeres are made so our collection starts there.

What makes the foundation for great style?
Great style starts with great quality. People can make their own style by picking up pieces from different collections and turning it into their own style. It’s very quirky which the Brits are good at. If you look good you also feel good and it helps to build confidence.
